Shippensburg University Small Business Development Center Makes More of a Presence at the Murata Business Center
HARRISBURG (October 14, 2008) -- The Shippensburg University Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will be increasing its presence at the Murata Business Center in Carlisle. One of its staff members will available onsite two days a month to assist the current clients, housed at Murata, grow their start up businesses.
"SBDC consultants help entrepreneurs develop the planning, management, and financial skills necessary to make their business thrive," stated Mike Unruh, director of the Shippensburg SBDC. "Our Center provides one-on-one, no-cost management consulting with the Pennsylvania SBDC Network providing specialized educational and consulting support to our clients in government procurement, international trade, technology commercialization and environmental management. Our state and national SBDC networks, as well as local partners, assist us in providing access to information critical to business decisions. At Murata, we will also seek opportunities for Shippensburg students to work as interns in start-up companies."
Currently, the Shippensburg SBDC works with fourteen outreach sites in its 4-county service area. The SBDC holds a regular schedule of educational workshops, in business planning and other key areas of business operations and management, at Murata and at other sites in Adams, Cumberland, Franklin and York counties.
"We wanted the SBDC to be more accessible to our clients at Murata," stated Karen Gunnison, Executive Director of the Murata Business Center. "They already provide workshops here at Murata, including First Step - which is a workshop focused on individuals beginning a business - but I wanted to see if it was possible for them to have set office hours. After speaking with Mike, the idea came to fruition."
The Murata Business Center is located in the Keystone Innovation Zone and the Technology Corridor Enterprise Zone, two state programs that may provide assistance in the form of tax credits, assistance seeking investment or financing help at later stages of business development.
The Murata Business Center is owned and operated by the Harrisburg Regional Chamber & Capital Region Economic Development Corporation (CREDC).The Murata Business Center provides entrepreneurs with support services. While in the incubator, a firm receives an array of training, mentoring and counseling opportunities, and shares a number of administrative services and personnel.
